"There is a need for a value system for African Americans that must take into account the political, social, economic, spiritual and emotional crisises that are faced in the western world. The seven principals of the Nguzo Saba incorporate all known religious and political systems and adopts them to our American selves. This concept is popularly referred to as KWANZAA, which is celebrated throughout the year or specifically on the seven days following Christmas."

Kuumba - Creativity: To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it
Nia - Purpose: To make ourselves as our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness
Ujamma - Cooperative Economics: To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses, and to profit from them together

"Realizing that we draw from tradition our cultural foundations, values and institutions and realizing that we cannot seek to return to a totally cultural past while being both in America as well as in the present, we must adopt an American way of life based upon the cultural tradition and reason with examination and critical readjustment. This value system is rational and modern enough in its orientation to allow the exchange of goods and services within America, yet never become a total reflection of it on the level of our values and life style."
-Maulana Ron Karenga

Imani - Faith: To believe with all our hearts in our parents, our teachers, our leaders, our people, and the righteousness and victory of our stuggle.
